Introduction

Bioinformatics

The vast amount of information generated by the development of molecular biology and sequencing techniques has led to the need for developing storage and organization techniques for the sequence data, which resulted in the field of Bioinformatics. This field involves the creation, maintenance, and utilization of databases of biological information to advance the understanding of biological processes.

In this field, some important tasks are to:

  • Locate genes and regulatory sites in DNA sequences.
  • Model 3-D structures and functions of proteins and RNAs.
  • Understand multiprotein interactions and metabolic pathways.
  • Explain evolutionary history through phylogenetic trees.

We have established a database, HaloWeb for bioinformatic analysis of Halobacterium sp. NRC-1 as well as several other Halophiles. A second website, Halo-Gen, with information on isolation, genome sequencing and NCBI links is also available.

We have posted some of our favorite links to useful bioinformatic tools at our Useful Web-Links site.

Feedback and input from educators at any level would be greatly appreciated. Please contact the Halo-Ed Team.
